Ahhhh, family ...

A society like the one where I live and where I have made most of my dreams a tangible reality is far from perfect but much closer to my aspirations than the utopia promised to me in the place where I was born. Economy determines everything  here and not like in the miserable little island where ideology is ahead of the most elementary forms of pragmatism. Like most Cubans we would much rather "skip insularity" than stay there, as a good friend said. Ever since I left I assumed the sweet obligation to financially assist my family, with the tremendous pride of having achieved my miraculous transition without failing to fulfill what I always considered my sacred duty; it cost me many hours of dedication to one, two and sometimes three jobs with armored conviction that every hour, every day, every week approached me to my goal of  living my real life while helping my family to make sure that for them life was more than a daily struggle for survival. It was nice while it lasted.

A transition of this nature requires above all an unbeatable presence of mind and total clarity, every step has to be the result of exquisite planning, there is too much at stake and mistakes can be literally fatal but money is also indispensable.

For a long time I was proud of what I had achieved with the absolute conviction of not having made any mistakes, thanks among other things to the invaluable help of my friend Gloria, who made every conceivable mistake and other difficult to even fathom. She took me under her wing and opened my eyes to a road littered with traps, winding paths and misleading bifurcations.

I provided my family in Cuba with everything they needed and even with what can almost fall into the luxury category for the conditions of the miserable island. I even deprived myself of many things with genuine pride; I felt it was a privilege to have the opportunity to help, I never saw it as charity or as an investment, nor even as a way for acceptance and even less for redemption, with that degree of pride I assumed that my transition would only reach its end when I got together  with my family in Cuba, so I assumed the costs of the change of identity with Cuba* through gritted teeth but with the conviction that it was for a good reason.

Unexpectedly I lost my main source of income and there was a string of misfortunes arising from this loss that put me on the very brink of the abyss; thanks to true friends and some other more unexpected blessings, right in the middle of my worst miseries I received a letter from my mother in which she exhorted me to repent before God for what I had done with my life because until such a thing happened "Nothing would ever go well" for me, Putting  in black and white what I felt then is impossible, suffice to say that the disappointment brought me back to the nameless depression of old that I thought I had conjured for good, I answered with my very firmest tone that I was neither to apologize nor to regret having had the courage to fight to achieve my most intimate happiness.

A few months went by without any communication, then I received by mail a huge envelope with the most devastating letters that I could have ever imagined, they were from my mother, my father and my sister in Cuba; they told me, among other things, that if I sent them money ever again they were going to burn it in front of whoever brought it to them. Should I say more? All in the name of the always inevitably divisive religion.

I have in Canada the family that I have earned with my attitudes, my generosity, and my talent, that is, after all, the true family, the other decided that I had no place in their lives. May their God bless their decision!

*The Cuban government forces anyone born in Cuba to go back exclusively on a Cuban passport, regardless of any other nationality you have acquired, this is done in violation of Article 30 of the Cuban Constitution which says that any Cuban who acquires another nationality automatically loses their own, however, if you were born in Cuba you have to pay for the most expensive –and useless- passport in the world in order to visit the country where you were born, it’s a money-making scheme from the Cuban authorities, just like the thousands of dollars I had to pay for them to amend my Birth Certificate.
